‘Saatleri Ayarlama Enstitusu’, a novel by the Turkish author
Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar has been published in English language by the Penguin Random House in the United States.
The book has been published under the title, ‘The Time
Regulation Institute’. Penguin Random House is one of the largest publishers in
the US.
The novel has been co-translated by the journalist-professor
Maureen Freely who has also translated the novels of Turkish Nobel winner
author Orhan Pamuk and Alexander Dawe.
Freely has also won a PEN/Heim Translation Fund grant in the
year 2010 for his translation of a story by Tanpinar. The book was published on
31st December last year of the Penguin Classic Series.
The novel describes the conflict between the modern West and Traditional East
and is one of the best novels by Tanpinar.
Well known critic Martin Riker wrote an article in The New
York Times called it ‘A Ramshackle Modernity’ and adding that ‘The Time
Regulation Institute’ is one of the first-rate comic novels.’
He also praised Tanpinar by calling him one of the most
informative figures in modern Turkish letters even after 50 years of his death.
‘The Time Regulation Institute’ was first published in
English in 2001 under the same title.
