Finally India
and the United States of America
has put a seal on a terrible month long diplomatic tussle by agreeing today to
remove the indicted Indian diplomat Divyani Khobragade from New York.
She has already left the US
shores as confirmed by the Indian Foreign Ministry and in return the US has agreed
not to prosecute her despite being criminally indicted by Attorney Preet
Bharara.
Devyani Khobragade the Indian diplomat was charged with
underpaying of wages to her made Sunita Richards while being in New York. She was
detained by the US
law agencies a month back.
Before allowing Ms. Khobragade the full immunity the US
state department did allow Attorney Bharara indicting her in two criminal
charges.
These charges are visa fraud and misrepresentation in a case
in which her Indian domestic helper or housekeeper’s wage issues were
involved.
Just for the records the US
state department first asked India
to waive the immunity for Ms. Khobragade even she was indicted by Bharara,
which was refused by India
and hence US asked for her departure.
Ms. Khobragade’s attorney Daniel Arshack has confirmed that
Ms. Devyani Khobragade has left the United States with her head held
high.
This only means that she was not being formally declared ‘persona
non grata’ nor she was expelled.
